Steel File
Cabinet Options
For the longest time, the steel file cabinet
has remained a standard in office furnishing. This is why
despite the arrival of plastic, wood and engineered materials,
steel cabinets remain a top option among buyers. These days
though, choosing one for your office is no longer as
straightforward as before. The numerous options can make
decision making complicated. One way to find the most suitable
unit is to keep in mind your major options.
Vertical File Cabinets
Most cabinets in the past were vertical file
types. This meant that files could only be stored from front to
back and drawers were often limited up to four. The problem
with vertical cabinets is that they do not always allow
convenient viewing of files and they often take up too much
space in tight offices. In general though, vertical models
still remain popular choices.
One great unit is the 4 Drawer Putty File
Cabinet by United Stationers. For an affordable $194 you get
drawers fitted with full suspension, spring loaded followers,
triple tied cradle suspension and nylon rollers. Drawers are
controlled by a core removable lock that manages all drawers
simultaneously.
Lateral File Cabinets
Instead of a steel file cabinet, you can opt
for a lateral type instead. Choose lateral cabinets if you want
to save front floor space and vertical office space at the same
time. Lateral types allow side to side file storage which also
makes it easier for users to view files even in a seated
position. These filing cabinets can have 2 to 5 drawers.
One brand model intended for heavy duty
filing is the 500 Series 36” Wide Five Drawer Lateral File by
Hon. At $577 this unit offers the maximum side to side document
storage capacity for filing cabinets. It can hold both legal
and letter size documents that can be secured by a single
central lock. This model features an anti tipping system for
safe use.
Wheeled File Cabinets
Wheeled filing models are also sometimes
called pedestals. Obviously, these are great options if you
require both filing space and mobility. Some wheeled models
have two drawers for documents. Many others however have single
bottom document drawers and two top pencil drawers.
One attractive and exceptional model is the
INNOVEX KM02 Filing Cabinet by Leda. Compared to other similar
types, this unit is considered quite affordable at $105.
Despite the low price though, you get maximum product
durability since it has a laminated and powder coated steel
frame. Its four large wheels can lock in place for security. It
has a single drawer for files and two top drawers for other
office items.
If you want double drawers purely for
document filing, the Regency Seating Filing Cabinet would be a
better option. Although it is a bit expensive at $258, its
solid steel frame promises long lasting durability. Drawers are
equipped with steel ball bearing full suspension.
A good steel file cabinet will never go out
of style. If you choose the right one the first time, you may
never need a new one for decades to come.
